Celebrating Women’s Strength and Unity: A Match for Equality
Date:

In the spirit of International Women’s Day, UN Women Albania, in partnership with the Albanian Football Federation, UN agencies, and journalists, organized a mini football tournament as part of UN Women’s global campaign #ForAllWomenAndGirls, promoting gender equality and empowerment through sport.
With four teams competing in an exciting series of matches, around 40 women and girls from these institutions took to the field, playing side by side in a dynamic and engaging event. On a beautiful March 8th, the football field became more than just a place for sport—it became a symbol of solidarity, progress, and determination. As the game kicked off, it was clear that this match was about more than just goals. It was about pushing boundaries, empowering women, and advancing gender equality.
Fiona McCluney captured the essence of the day by highlighting:
“It's a beautiful day to play football. We celebrate International Women's Day and the women who play football — for peace, for equality, and for fun. I am proud to be part of this tournament, as football is a great metaphor for progress. Today, we are not just marching forward; we are pushing ahead with determination and speed, playing different positions and roles, just as women must to pursue gender equality. The work for gender equality is about breaking barriers, making rapid strides, and ensuring that no one is left behind. This is the momentum we need to create a future where equality is not just a goal but a reality.”
Pamela Ndocaj from the Albanian Football Association’s staff echoed this perspective, noting: “This match is a celebration of solidarity among girls and women. It’s not just a game; it’s a message. When we come together, we succeed. March 8th isn’t just a day for giving flowers; it’s a day for action and change.”

The day was a call to action, a reminder that equality isn’t just a wish, but something that requires action.
“The message we have is for all women and girls. This day is dedicated to them all. However, we must stand together to build a more equal and just society for both men and women”, emphasized Alba Agolli, Project Manager working for UN Women, highlighting the importance of unity.
UN Women has been collaborating with the Albanian Football Federation through various campaigns and activations to raise awareness about violence and discrimination, challenge gender stereotypes, and promote equal opportunities in all fields, including sports.
It’s about solidarity, about ensuring that women’s voices are heard and their rights respected.
“I hope women will have more faith in themselves, trust their abilities, and break every stereotype, especially those imposed by male-dominated perspectives”, Vilma Masha, sports journalist noted.
The event was not only a celebration but also a call to action for more women to break free from limiting beliefs and reach their full potential.
On this International Women’s Day, the women on the field reminded us that change is possible when we unite, act, and push for change.
