Advancing Gender Equality Commitments in Albania A Review of Selected Legislation

The United Nations Gender Thematic and Results Group in Albania, led by UN Women Albania, reviewed selected legislation from a gender equality perspective, to assess compliance with international legal standards, including EU gender aquis. The review was conducted thanks to the generous support of the Resident Coordinator’s Office and drew on the UN Checklist on Elimination of Discriminatory Laws against Women and Girls (2021). The legal expertise for the endeavor was provided by the Centre for Legal and Civic Initiatives (CLCI). The review identifies key issues identified in the Criminal Code, Family Code, and Civil Code with particular emphasis on sections related to sexual violence, early marriage, sexual harassment in the workplace and co-ownership in the agricultural family – and it provides recommendations for legal revisions.
