Municipalities of Tirana and Gramsh launch their Local Gender Equality Action Plans 2022-2024

The Municipality of Tirana launched its second Local Gender Equality Action Plan 2022-2024 which represents its public commitment to undertake concrete steps for the advancement of gender equality in Tirana.

The Plan was adopted following broad-based and inclusive consultations with public and nonpublic institutions, the civil society, academia, youth, and private sector representatives. The entire process was technically supported by UN Women, as part of the Joint Programme “European Union for Gender Equality in Albania,” financed by the European Union through the Albania SDG Acceleration Fund.

This is the second Gender Equality Action Plan for the Municipality of Tirana since the signing of the European Charter for Equality of Women and Men in Local Life five years ago. The drafting and adoption of these plans are considered crucial steps in fulfilling the commitments set out in the Charter.

Speaking at the launch event, Enkelejda Bregu, Social Policies, Employment and Gender Equality Programme Manager from the EU Delegation in Albania invited all municipalities to be part of this commitment.

“This is a step that contributes to Albania’s EU integration process and the achievement of gender equality through concrete measures and plans.”

Anisa Subashi The Director of Social Services at the Municipality of Tirana, Anisa Subashi highlighted that “Gender equality is at the heart of good governance, to improve the response to all citizens, engage in gender sensitive analysis, planning, budgeting, services and monitoring.

Likewise, the Municipality of Gramsh, a town in the center of Albania, adopted its first Local Gender Equality Action Plan 2022-2024 at the end of October, one year after signing the European Charter for Equality of Women and Men in Local Life. A launching ceremony was organized jointly with UN Women.

“I consider these two documents as the best guide to lead all our efforts as a municipality, not only towards meeting the different needs of women and men, but also to focus on fully identifying and addressing the needs of all groups.”

The adopted plan contains measures aiming at strengthening women’s voices, addressing the specific needs of women and men, especially those from vulnerable groups, empowering young women and men by providing them with the necessary life and other skills, as well as encouraging them to act as agents of change in society.

So far fourteen municipalities in Albania have signed the European Charter for Equality of Women and Men in Local Life, of which 12 have prepared Gender Equality Action Plans.
